An AI chat widget is a small chat box that sits in the corner of your website and answers visitors automatically using an AI model. Unlike old live chat, nobody has to be sitting at a keyboard for a visitor to get a real answer, which is why it works at night and at weekends.
How it gets onto a website
A chat widget is almost always one line of JavaScript pasted into your site's HTML. The script loads the chat box, and the answering happens on the vendor's servers. You do not need a developer, a plugin, or a platform migration, and it works the same on WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, Squarespace or a hand-built site.
This is worth knowing because it is the fastest thing to try. Where a WhatsApp Business number needs approvals that can take weeks, a website widget can be live the same afternoon.
What separates a good one from a bad one
- Does it know your prices and stock? A widget answering from a generic FAQ will confidently invent things. One connected to your real catalogue quotes numbers you can stand behind.
- Does it capture the lead? Answering a question and letting the visitor leave anonymously is a wasted conversation. It should get a phone number or email while the person is still interested.
- Does it hand over? When a question is sensitive or it does not know, it should escalate to a human rather than guess.
- Does anything happen afterwards? Most widgets stop when the visitor closes the tab. That is the moment most of the money is lost.
Widget or WhatsApp?
It depends where your customers already are. In Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria and South Africa, most people message a small business on WhatsApp first, and the website is the second touch. In the US, UK and Australia it is usually the other way round. The useful setup answers both with the same agent, so a customer gets the same information wherever they ask.
