What is database reactivation?

Last updated 7 September 2026 · HustleFlow team

Database reactivation is contacting people who already bought from you or enquired once, and have since gone quiet. The list already exists, usually in a phone, a spreadsheet or a till system. It is the cheapest source of new revenue a small business has, because you are not paying to find these people again.

Why it beats advertising, arithmetically

Every new customer from an advert costs money before they buy anything. A past customer costs nothing to reach, already knows what you sell, and has already decided once that you were worth paying. The reason most businesses advertise instead is not that it works better, it is that reactivation requires actually going through the list, and nobody has an afternoon for that.

What a campaign actually involves

  1. Get the list somewhere usable. Usually a CSV export from a till, a phone's contacts, or an order history.
  2. Segment it. Someone who bought last month should not get the same message as someone who bought two years ago.
  3. Write a message with a reason. "We miss you" is not a reason. New stock, a seasonal service, or a genuine offer is.
  4. Send it on a channel they actually read. For most small businesses that is WhatsApp or SMS, not email.
  5. Handle the replies. This is where campaigns collapse: fifty people reply at once and nobody can answer them.

The rules that keep it from being spam

Message people who genuinely dealt with you, not a bought list. Give an obvious way to opt out and honour it immediately. Keep the frequency low, since a reactivation list is not a newsletter. And respect the local rules on marketing messages, which on WhatsApp specifically means using approved message templates and staying inside the platform's own sending limits.
