What is the WhatsApp Business API, and how is it different from the WhatsApp Business app?
The app is free and runs on one phone, with one person typing the replies. The API is the version Meta built for software: no phone needed, several people and AI agents can reply from the same number, and messages can be sent automatically. It is not free: Meta charges per message.
How much does the WhatsApp Business API cost in Kenya?
Two parts. Meta charges per delivered message: about KES 2.90 (USD 0.0225) for a marketing message and KES 0.52 (USD 0.0040) for a utility message. From 1 October 2026, replies inside the 24 hours after a customer messages you are charged at the utility rate too. Then there is the provider. On HustleFlow, a WhatsApp number is included on the Growth plan at $50 a month with 1,000 AI conversations.
Can I apply for the WhatsApp Business API directly with Meta?
You can, but it takes weeks: business verification, then app review for the messaging permissions, and more again if you send on behalf of other businesses. Most Kenyan businesses reach the API through a provider that has already cleared that. HustleFlow connects your number through an approved Meta partner.
Can I keep using the WhatsApp Business app on the same number?
No. Connecting a number to the API moves it off the app, so it can no longer be used in the green app on a phone. Most businesses give HustleFlow a second SIM or a new number. Bringing your own number costs the same as taking a new one.
Is there a limit on how many customers I can message?
Replies to customers who message you first are not limited. Messages you start, such as follow-ups and campaigns, are capped by Meta: a new account can reach 250 different people a day, rising to 2,000, 10,000 and then 100,000 as Meta verifies your business and your number keeps a good quality rating.
